Instructional tools, accessibility and video workshops scheduled for August and September

Throughout the academic year, Innovative Learning’s consulting and training team offers workshops and work sessions to help faculty develop courses, engage students and enhance accessibility.

Events scheduled for August and September are geared toward helping instructors start the semester strong, and include workshops on video production, creating accessible documents and presentations, and introductions to the host of instructional tools available for use on campus.

All workshops are open to faculty, graduate students and staff. Those unable to attend a workshop can request a one-on-one consultation or a customized workshop for a college, school or department by contacting tlt@purdue.edu.

Assessing and Engaging Students with Kaltura In-Video Quizzing
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Aug. 20, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Sept. 24

Did you know you can add in-video quizzing to your Kaltura videos? Learn how to create quizzes and how to integrate them with the Blackboard grade center.

Speed Dating with Innovative Instructional Tools
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Aug. 26

Did you know Purdue has created its own series of instructional tools to help faculty connect with students? This hour-long event allows instructors to learn about this software in a quick, hands-on “speed dating” format designed to give a brief introduction to each available technology. Tools on display include Circuit (peer evaluation and calibrated review), Hotseat (back-channel discussions and polling), Passport (digital badges for assessing learner competencies) and Replay (low-stakes gamified quizzing).

Self-service Video Production Made Easy
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Aug. 28

Learn how to set up, record, and review videos in a self-service VideoExpress studio.  Participants will have the opportunity to create their own sample video incorporating digital inputs, such as PowerPoint slides, movie files, or websites.

Editing and Publishing Video Using Camtasia and Kaltura
10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Aug. 29

Learn how to edit and publish videos for your course or webpage using Purdue-supported technology, including how to make screen recordings, edit videos and add visual effects.

Improving the Grading Process with Gradescope
10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Sept. 3

Gradescope is designed to help manage your grading workflow, increase the speed of the grading process and improve the consistency of your grading. Learn how to create and manage student assignments, create grading rubrics and connect Gradescope to Blackboard.

Tech Today
11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Sept. 6

A monthly gathering of faculty to showcase practical instructional technologies as well as their pedagogical uses in courses.

Classroom Accessibility Basics  
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 9

Learn about the University’s accessibility policies and resources, including a review of the current university accessibility standard, how it applies to classroom learning and some important steps to take to ensure that your courses are accessible. The workshop will provide a brief overview of document formatting, video captioning, creating alt-texts and responding to student accommodation requests.

Peer Review with Circuit
1 to 2 p.m., Sept. 11

Learn how to use Circuit, a Purdue-designed innovative instructional tool. Circuit allows instructors to facilitate calibrated peer evaluation and review, which improves student performance as both writers and reviewers. This workshop will cover how to create and schedule an assignment, the difference between calibrated and standard peer review and how to create a rubric for student use.

Creating Accessible Presentations with PowerPoint
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 16

Learn how to make PowerPoint presentations more inclusive for students with disabilities, including how to use template fields, add alt text, change the reading order and how to do accessibility checks.

Creating Accessible Documents with Word and PDF
2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sept. 16

Learn how to make accessible documents using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro, including how to use headings, add alt text to images and graphs, and save documents in a way that improves accessibility.

Gamified Quizzing with Replay
10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Sept. 26

Replay is a Purdue-designed quizzing environment with elements of gameplay. Students can retake quizzes to improve their score, earn achievements, or work their way up the anonymous class leaderboard. This session will cover the basics of creating quizzes and collecting results for assessment.

Accessible Website Basics
1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sept. 30

Learn about the university's accessibility standard and international guidelines, and gain hands-on experience in creating and testing a website for accessibility in a WYSIWYG environment. Attendees should have some experience creating and managing their own websites before attending.

Student Software Trainers
Did you know there’s a campus team that helps students, staff and faculty learn how to use software like MATLAB, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator? This team of skilled students regularly hosts workshops open to the entire Purdue community, and can serve as a resource for learning new skills or investigating various technologies.
